THE DREAM

July 1, 2021

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR MURAL PROCESS

This Mural Tribute was painted by Emanuel WIsdom and Myself over the course of 14 days. When I approached the Building owner for permission to paint this wall he told me he wanted the mural to represent UNITY, I could think of no purer symbol of unity than MLK. Once the project started to take shape I immediately contacted Emanuel for assistance. We have collaborated several times in the past, always by combing his masterful typography with my illustrative style. After reading through dozens of quotes we decided on the one you see before you; “I have decided to stick with love, hate is to great a burden to bear” - MLK . This timeless message of love and acceptance is of paramount importance in our current climate. Manny and myself set out to create a mural that would uplift and inspire.

The response form the community has been so overwhelming positive, I can’t thank you all enough for support. This mural was a collaborative effort, I could not have painted this without the help of my assistants, huge thanks to Joy zavada, jaimie bamberger, zach yahn, and jimmy lowe. I would also like to thank Ryan Hnat of North East Art Project for the support, and Rose of Scranton tomorrow for helping make this possible, and for organizing this event.

HUMAN AFTER ALL

July 31, 2020

This mural was painted In downtown Scranton by Emanuel Wisdom of UNA design and myself, Eric Bussart. We wanted to create a mural that would inspire togetherness in these polarizing times. The gorgeous lettering centerpiece inspires a message of hope and unity, while the background elements carry a more somber connotation.  The Poplar trees depicted in this design draw inspiration from the Heart Wrenching classic rendition of "Strange Fruit" by Nina Simone. The song depicts the horrors of a post slavery america. With powerful poetic imagery she depicts the victims of Lynchings as "Strange Fruit" hanging from "Poplar trees".

the design draws from the first four bars of the poem:

Southern trees

Bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
And blood at the roots
Black bodies
Swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin'
From the poplar trees

By using the imagery of the POPLAR trees leaves and flowers we are drawing a parallel between the unjust murder of african americans by police to the lynch mobs of the distant past. This subtle use of iconography gives a greater historical context to the plight of african americans in this country without depicting morbid subject matter outright. When creating public art it is of the utmost importance that one considers the entire viewing audience of a piece, puts care and tenderness into the execution, and produces a beautiful end result.  With all these factors in mind we set out to create a visually striking and thought provoking mural for this wall in downtown scranton.  We believe that mural art is immensely important for any community, both as a way to improve quality of life, and a vehicle to inspire positive change.

WEST SCRANTON INVADERS MURAL

July 24, 2020

INVADERS MURAL

You can find this large patriotic mural on the side of the Catalano building in west scranton. The mural honors Matt McGloin, A local player that went on to play for Penn State, the NFL, and even the XFL. When I sat down with the owner of Catalano to discuss the mural design he specifically requested that I portray Matt in the mural. He recounted how Matt used to eat hoagies from Catalano's before his high school football games. In the mural Matt is depicted wearing his high school uniform, number and team name.

The mural was commissioned and paid for by NeighborWorks of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The design used was chosen from a pool of three, all designed by myself. The final design was chosen via a community wide vote, after hundreds of votes were tallied this design won by a landslide.
